7 Reasons You Should Give a Shit about Toxin-Free Skin Care

The F word.

You might consider its use unnecessary. Offensive even.

Yet we hope you'll agree with us that what's really offensive is the almost total spread of toxins throughout the beauty industry and the absence of natural skin care brands that actually are what they claim to be.

And it's for that reason that we invited potty mouthed toxin-free beauty blogger, Ariane Chui from Fuck Toxins to write a guest post for us.

Trust me, I know you don’t have many spare fucks to give. Neither do I so I wouldn’t be asking you to give one unless I thought it was necessary.

But it is.

The average woman uses 12 cosmetics a day containing 168 chemicals. Every day. For a lifetime. The potential cumulative effects of the toxins in your beauty products scares me and I want it to scare you too.

Here’s why:

REASON 1: What you put on your body may be more important that what you put in your body.

Your skin is your largest (and thinnest) organ. Only 0.25cm separates your body from potential toxins. Anything you put on your skin will be absorbed straight into your bloodstream within seconds.

REASON 2: We must take back responsibility for our health

The most annoying argument we clean beauty revolutionists often hear is: ‘if it was dangerous, it wouldn’t be on the shelves’. While I too would love to be living in a world where the powers that be truly had our very best interests at heart, this just isn’t the case.

REASON 3: There may be cancer-causing chemicals in your cosmetics

There is no denying that cancer rates are on the rise and yet no-one seems to be questioning why this is happening. Despite many studies proving that some chemicals used in the personal care industry are carcinogens (such as formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives) they are still being allowed into our homes and onto our skin. Choosing from a specific selection of natural skin care brands is a far safer bet.

REASON 4: Hormones, hormones, hormones

We all know that hormones can play havoc on our moods and our skin during certain times of the month but it gets a lot darker. Many ingredients found in beauty products (especially parabens) are potential endocrine disruptors with the ability to mimic estrogen. The extra estrogen in our body caused by not using toxin-free skin care products can cause cancerous tumours, birth defects and other developmental disorders.

REASON 5: Natural skin care brands, toxin-free skin care products and organic beauty products are always cruelty-free.

A lot of the big cosmetic companies test on animals. Subjecting these cute little balls of fluff to terrifying and painful procedures is beyond ugly. Make sure you’re not funding this by searching for your favourite toxin-free skin care brand here on the PETA website.

REASON 6: Toxins are also poisoning our planet

Cosmetics and personal care products do their damage on the environment after they’ve been washed down our sinks. These chemicals go into our lakes, rivers and public water systems. As all life is dependent on water, the effects of these chemicals go far beyond aquatic life. Choosing toxin-free skin care products is better for our planet as a whole.

REASON 7: Switching is easy and doesn’t have to cost the earth

Many people automatically put off switching to genuinely natural skin care brands and their organic products because they believe that either:

  1. They don’t work, or
  2. They cost too much

This is simply not true. Benecos is one of my favourite make-up brands and a lipstick of theirs costs just £6.95.

There you have it. I hope I have given you enough reasons to start giving a shit about the toxins lurking in your beauty products. and to start using toxin-free skin care products.

We, as consumers hold ALL the power. Every £ we spend is a vote. Vote for your health. Vote for the environment. Vote for our children’s children. What you don’t support, companies must change because it will affect their bottom line.
